Beyond the Controller
Here at Gaming Lessons, we want to help people step up their game. We realized that lessons were the single most powerful way to do that. But we wanted to do something more to help people push even further. As you can see, we’ve taken that literally with countless articles already written and even more coming.
Care to Evolve?
In 2006 a post was made on the MLG forums. Its title? Evolving as a Team. Thousands of views later, hundreds of links, and dozens of reposts, it became an important source for any team wanting to, well, evolve. It seems like its been forever. No matter. Today, we evolve again.
Practicing Together
Practicing as a team isn’t monkey business. You don’t just pick up a controller, log online, and start shooting things. Well, you can. You just won’t get much out of the so-called “practice.” What you really need is structure. Enjoy as Throoper shares his team’s philosophy.
Speak Fast, Clearly
The human mind is absolutely remarkable. It’s capable of processing the endless amounts of data that bombard our every sense at every moment. Unfortunately, when sharing with others during a tense game, we often speak with a complete lack of clarity. Enter the speaking drills.
Importance of Networking
As gamers, we have a tendency to look at things in terms of “me versus ‘them’” while scoping out the field. Unfortunately, such a narrow view destroys one of the most valuable resources we have: each other. Rather than burn bridges, we as gamers need to get to work building them.
Call it out!
You have a microphone. You should use it. But what to say? It seems simple enough—throw out what you see. But effective communication is much, much more than just that. It’s about creating a map, a mental map, for the game. With that map, success can be yours. If you want it.
Flank ‘Em!
When the game is on, we tend to zone in on certain events. The fact that peripheral vision is limited by our display only adds to that. End result? We miss things. For teams that work together, this presents an opportunity: flanking. So attack! From the front and the sides!
Blast into the Past
Our journey towards evolution starts now. Today, we revisit the old Evolving as a team article in its entirety and wholly unedited state, of the original article, circa 2006. You will laugh at some of the old names. Some of the old ways. But read on, you shall. Evolve, you will.
Teamsnap Reviewed!
Carly Florina, former president of Hewlett-Packard, once said “the goal is to transform data into information, and information into insight.†This holds true for everything, yet few teams take it to heart. Excuses, but no data analysis. With Teamsnap, that’s about to change.
I was a Student
During the years, thousands of students have passed through the “halls†of Gaming Lessons. Each has a story. In the first of our profiles, we look at a student who rose to become an analyst of the game, a member of the Gaming Lessons staff, and of course, a better gamer.
