Chronicles of a Coach: Lammie's Transformation

Str8 Rippin. The team’s name inspires feelings as wide and varied as hope to fear when talked about. But as good as the players are, and as much as we know their stories, there is one yet to be told: that of their coach, Lammie: a man who is more than a coach, more than a friend.

Editor’s Note: With this article, a new series is launched: Chronicles of a Coach. Written by Lammie, it will explore the world of coaching in Halo 3. That in mind, every story has a beginning. Join us as we explore Lammie’s.

When I hear people talk about wild experiences with travels and opportunities, I always giggle a little bit, knowing that my hobby has brought me on dozens of adventures and brought me lots of fun. I’ve learned to love Major League Gaming over the past couple of years. I’ve coached, played, and spectated, driven and flown thousands of miles, and collected memories from countless cities and airports through gaming, and I’ve loved every minute of it.

My First Time…

My first tournament with Str8 Rippin was MLG Charlotte 07. It was my first time coaching, and I was pumped. My teammates were Tsquared, Foulacy, Naded, and Legit. This sweet opportunity came about because of a lucky coincidence I stumbled into.

It All Started Because of a Girl (Doesn’t it Always?)

I had known Tsquared’s girlfriend since middle school and, when I heard about professional gaming, I asked her to introduce me. From there on out, Tom and I…

About the Author: Lammie

Known as the coach of professional Halo 3 team Str8 Rippin, Lammie is often considered one of the best on the circuit. A top gamer in his own right, he brings the analytic mindset of a coach together with the passionate drive of the player to become more than just the guy with the clipboard & timer: he is, in every sense of the word, part of the team. As a writer, he works to bring the sum of his experiences to you: learn from his mistakes, capitalize on the right choices he made, and grow as a player and as a coach.

Coaching is a lot more than just holding a stop watch, making power-up callouts & power weapon callouts. What exactly do you do for Str8? Because it just seems like your just a 5th Wheel, someone needed to hold a watch and make simplistic call-outs. Do you actually even Coach the team? Like really Coach the team? Or do they Coach you?
